Die Kategorie Bester Song wurde im Jahr 1935 das erste Mal vergeben. Mit diesem Oscar wird der Songwriter für den besten Song eines Films geehrt.
In den Jahren 2007 und 2008 stellte jeweils eine Filmproduktion drei der fünf nominierten Musikstücke. Daraufhin wurde das Reglement geändert. Seit 2009 dürfen nicht mehr als zwei Stücke aus einem Film unter die finalen nominierten Kandidaten gelangen (die Vorauswahl an Musikstücken pro Film ist dagegen nach wie vor unbegrenzt).
